US HISTORY
My CRT* Book Tower contains my own high school and college textbooks in some cases from over half-a-century ago. I have only Re•Illustrated and Re•Contextualized the physical forms to both reinforce the physical books against time, and to shift the meanings of the books through time.
The actor and NASA spokesperson, Nichelle Nichols, an African American female from Illinois, described taking and discussing the book she was reading, Uhuru, to her interview for ‘Star Trek’ with the show’s creator Gene Roddenberry, a European American male from Texas. The book, by Robert Ruark, a European American male from North Carolina, weaves stories of Africa emerging from colonialism in the1950s and 1960s.
The Uhuru book title inspired her character name, ‘Uhura’ the African Earth woman in a far-flung future in outer space that included African people. That name emerged only after her interview. DR Martin Luther King JR urged her to continue in the role beyond her year commitment. She went on to become an official spokesperson for NASA. There is a mapped 1.5 wide minor planet orbiting our sun officially named 68410Nichols in her honor.
The word Uhuru translates as freedom in the African language of Swahili. It is also one of the slogans of the Proud Boys, a contemporary American white supremacy movement. US HISTORY.
