This past year has been hard for everyone in many ways, but one good thing for me has been the opportunity to spend more time than usual in nature. I’ve walked in the woods, listened to the wind in the trees, felt the sun on my face, dipped into lakes, inhaled the green scent. I tried to gather all that I could, great armfuls of the feelings and sensations I found there in the woods, to keep with me. It seemed that if I just listened closely enough, just observed the movements of the trees enough, just let my soul absorb that place enough, I would finally understand what it was trying to tell me. I brought this feeling to my art practice, with this series I call “Messages from the Journey.” It uses asemic writing, which is mark-making that seems as if it is meant to be read as words but instead becomes a graphic element within each work. This technique allows the viewer to find their own messages and meaning in their experience of my art. Using ink, graphite, charcoal, oil pastel, watercolor, and acrylic paint on Yupo paper, I’ve created multi-layered abstract landscapes where the messages are just waiting to be discovered.
